Research opportunities
Join the Institute of Mechanical, Process and Energy Engineering
The Institute of Mechanical, Process and Energy Engineering (IMPEE) offers a wide range of PhD opportunities for UK, EU, and international students. Our research spans core themes including Biomedical Engineering, Digital Engineering, Energy Harvesting and Conversion, and Multiphase Flow.
We provide an excellent research environment supported by cutting-edge facilities, strong industrial links, and a vibrant community of postgraduate researchers working on projects with real-world impact.
Funded PhD projects
Many of our research projects are eligible for studentship support. These are typically funded by UK Research Councils such as EPSRC and are primarily open to UK applicants who hold, or expect to achieve, a first-class or upper second-class degree in a relevant subject.
We also welcome applications from self-funded students or those holding external sponsorships—including international applicants with government or institutional funding.
To explore current opportunities, visit the EPS Scholarships project list hosted by the School of Engineering and Physical Sciences (EPS), which includes a number of fully funded projects across IMPEE’s research themes.
EPS Scholarships generally cover:
- Tuition fees
- A tax-free stipend (for a minimum of 3.5 years)
Some scholarships are available for overseas students.
