FAQs - Edinburgh Open Days
Frequently asked questions
If you have any other questions about the Open Days then please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
I cannot attend either Open Day date. Can I arrange to visit on a different day?
Yes you can. We would be very happy to arrange an individual visit for you on an alternative date. Please e-mail us at email@example.com. Once you've applied, we'll also invite you to an Offer Holder Visit Day event in March or April.
I have registered to attend on your website, what else do I need to book?
Nothing! Once you've registered to attend our Open Day, all of the activities on the day are drop-in and unreserved. Please note however, that we will prioritise prospective students over family and other guests for any activities that become crowded.
How do I get to Heriot-Watt University’s Edinburgh Campus?
Visit our plan your journey section for more information.
Please note the SATNAV postcode is EH14 4AR.
Is it best to arrive at 10am exactly?
You can come and go as you please during the day, and you don’t have to arrive ‘on-time’ at 10am. Similarly, you won’t have to stay until 3pm, but most visitors remain with us for 3-4 hours to take advantage of all the fantastic activities taking place throughout the day.
Typically, the event gets less busy in the afternoon, so if you are not a fan of crowds then feel free to schedule your visit for the later part of the event but we recommend arriving by around 1.30pm at the very latest.
Where do I go when I arrive?
Once you have arrived on campus, please make your way to our Welcome Marquee located outside the Main Entrance Reception.
What do I need to bring with me?
Enthusiasm and an enquiring mind! Also, your Open Day confirmation (printed or downloaded). When you check-in we will provide you with a printed Open Day programme and a bag to carry all the information you receive on the day.
I wish to attend an academic or central information presentation, where should I go?
Please check the presentation schedules in our Open Day programmes. All presentations are offered on a drop-in basis so we recommend you arrive in sufficient time to secure a place. There will be Open Day helpers outside each of the presentation venues who will direct you in and out at the allotted times.
Can I bring my family with me to a presentation or tour?
Yes, provided there are spaces available. Please note that prospective students will be prioritised in the event that presentations or tours become too crowded.
I missed the scheduled academic presentation(s), who can I speak to?
There are Subject Stands located around the university with staff available to chat with you on an individual basis about any aspect of your chosen subject. Please check the Open Day programme map for more details on where the subject stands are located.
I have a specific question about the support services available at Heriot-Watt, who can I speak to?
In the Student Experience Zone, you will find a range of support service staff available to speak to on an individual basis. Please check the Open Day programme map for full details.
Will I be able to view the on-campus accommodation?
Yes, you will be able to explore different categories of our student halls of residence throughout the day on a drop-in basis. Please check the Open Day programme map for location details.
Will I be able to talk to current students during the Open Day?
Absolutely! There will be plenty of our current students working as ambassadors during the event who will be delighted to speak with you about their studies and experiences at Heriot-Watt. Please feel free to speak to them at any point - they can be identified by their Student Ambassador t-shirts.
How easy is it to get around the campus on the day?
Our Edinburgh campus is 380 acres and although you will not be required to cover every inch, there is a lot to explore so it is wise to leave yourself sufficient time to see and do as much as possible. There will be lots of signage and Open Day helpers located around the campus on the day to help you find your way. We recommend that you allow at least 15 minutes to transfer between activities across the campus.
I’m lost, what should I do?
Don’t panic! For directions or information just ask one of our Student Ambassadors who will be happy to assist you. There will also be staffed Information Points for the day which will be listed in your Open Day programme.
Is there somewhere to eat on campus?
There are lots of catering options on campus where you will be able to purchase something to eat or drink...go exploring! Please just ask our catering staff if you have any vegetarian, vegan, pescatarian, halal, gluten-free, lactose intolerant or any other dietary requirements. We have ATMs on the campus and toilets are available in buildings across the campus. Ask an Open Day helper for the nearest location.
Is there Wi-Fi access?
Free Wi-Fi access will be available during your visit and details will be provided on arrival in your Open Day programme.
Is Heriot-Watt University disability friendly?
Disability is not a barrier to studying at Heriot-Watt and enjoying every aspect of student life. Our campus is well equipped for students who have a disability or additional requirement.
If you have access requirements or impaired mobility then please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org in advance so that we have time to put any required support in place for you. On arrival please make yourself known to a member of staff to ensure you get any assistance you require.
Staff from our Disability Service will also be available to speak with in the James Watt Centre throughout the Open Day. Accessible information can be made available in alternative formats if required. Please contact the Disability Service on 0131 451 3509 or email email@example.com.
Will there be any filming and/or photography taking place during the Open Day?
Most likely. A full copy of the University’s image capture policy is available at an Information Point on the day.
What if I require first aid or there is an emergency?
Please contact a member of staff at the Information Points or any other member of staff for assistance. There is a Medical Centre on the Campus and trained First Aiders will be on hand.
We also have 24 hour security on campus who can be contacted in an emergency on 0131 451 3500 or by using the red phones located in buildings across the campus.
Please note that the campus will be open to traffic as usual during the Open Days. Large numbers of visitors mean that pavements in certain areas may become very crowded; please take care when crossing roads.
Can you store luggage for me during the Open Day?
We can store items of luggage securely at our Main Entrance Reception but please be aware that your luggage will be screened and checked prior to being accepted. Space is also limited and will be allocated on a first come first served basis. Please note, you must collect luggage by 5pm – unfortunately we cannot store it overnight.
