This Mathematical Physics degree will give you a solid understanding in both mathematics and physics. The course offers a wide range of mathematical and physics topics, and also gives you the option to transfer between Mathematics and Physics at an early stage. Our Mathematical Physics degree will also give you an extensive range of computer modelling skills.


This integrated masters in Mathematical Physics course is accredited by the Institute of Physics (IOP) for the purpose of fully meeting the educational requirement for Chartered Physicist..

Course content

Year 1

Involves an even split between core mathematics and core physics and includes topics such as: calculus, differential equations, classical mechanics and classical fields.

Year 2

Involves an even split between core mathematics and core physics and includes topics such as analysis and statistical mechanics. There will also be courses in experimental and computing techniques.

Year 3

Involves core mathematics and physics and includes topics such as: advanced differential equations, solid state and quantum physics. Practical work introduces an emphasis on mathematical modelling of systems.

Year 4

Advanced-level topics are introduced such as Optimisation; Partial Differential Equations and Quantum Mechanics. Project work is designed to take advantage of additional mathematical and modelling skills developed in earlier years of study.

Year 5

Includes advanced physics and advanced mathematics courses such as Mathematical Biology and Medicine or PDE Numerical Analysis. A major part of the year is the research project, in which the student is attached to a University research group and is enabled to perform original work on their own or as an integral part of the research team. Typically projects will be set to exploit student skills in mathematical subjects.

Year 1

Standard entry requirements
  • Highers AAAB or ABBBB (including Physics or Mathematics at A)
  • A-Levels BBC (including Physics and Mathematics BB)
  • Int. Baccalaureate 29 points (with Higher Level Physics and Mathematics)
  • BTEC DDM (in relevant subject)
  • HNC B in graded unit (in relevant HNC)

Minimum entry requirements*

  • Highers BBBC (including Physics and Mathematics BB)
  • A-Levels BCC (including Physics and Mathematics)

* Minimum: under our Fair Access Policy, we will relax our standard entry requirements for some Scottish students depending on their circumstances. Our minimum requirements will apply if you:

  • live in an area within the Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation lowest 20% (SIMD20), or
  • are care experienced.

  • Please note that the Chemical Physics programmes also require a relevant Chemistry qualification appropriate to the Level (for example, A-Levels or Highers at grade C for Level 1, A-Levels or Advanced Highers at grade B for Level 2)
