I think the role of the Dean is providing an important conduit between staff and executive to help the University deliver its mission with relevance to academic issues of quality, fairness and development.

  • Originator of two MScs at HWU and former Course Director (one is 25 years old this year)

  • Staff member for 25 years with 10 years previous in industry (including 4 Netherlands, 2 Indonesia)
  • Visiting Professor 6 years in Brazil (UFRJ), HWU Brazil Strategy Group (establishing Dual Degree)
  • Former Head of Institute of Petroleum Engineering (5.5 years, incl. 2 years ICIT, Orkney Campus)
  • Former Total/BG Group Professor (Industrial links)
  • Former Head pan-University Energy Academy
  • Active researcher with more than £10M funding over 20 years
  • Published more than 100 papers, H-index of 21, 25 PhD students
  • Public Engagement - Orkney and Edinburgh Science Festival, Big Tent, SNP and Lib Party Conferences
  • Passionate advocate for all things HWU and committed to its multidisciplinary international mission
  • Personally interested in wellbeing and mental health of both staff and students support Athena Swan
