Local history collections

Local community group

The local history collections focus on the area surrounding Riccarton such as Currie, Juniper Green, Balerno and Colinton.  The largest collection is the John Tweedie collection of research notes.  John Tweedie was a local historian who worked at Kinleith paper mill in Currie and was a founder of Currie History Society.  His main areas of interest were the paper, grain and snuff mills along the Water of Leith.  Other significant collections include the Juniper Bush Ancient Order of Foresters Friendly Society.

The collection of 5,000 photographs and slides collected by Currie History Society and John Tweedie were digitised courtesy of a grant from Edinburgh City Council obtained by the Society. These include images of people and places in the local communities of Currie, Juniper Green, Balerno and Currie from the 1850s to 1980s.  Of particular interest are those of the paper mills, in particular Kinleith Mill, the Riccarton estate, Larchgrove House, scouts and guides and schools.

The collection is fully catalogued and available on-line.  Most catalogue entries have an image attached dependant on copyright.  Digital or photographic copies for research use can be supplied subject to a charge.
