Heriot-Watt Racing is the student-led team which takes part in the annual Formula Student competition. The competition is run by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and takes place every July at the Silverstone Racing Circuit. Teams of university students from around the world build high performance single-seater racing cars to compete in a variety of tasks which test design principles, value for money, and on-track ability. The challenge is to produce a car for autocross or sprint racing that has high performance in acceleration, braking and handling, which is also easy to maintain and reliable. The car must also be designed in mind of manufacture in the order of hundreds of cars per year and thus a profitable business plan must be constructed in order to attract investors such as manufacturing companies or venture capitalists to supply funding necessary to make the car a financial success.
