Project Title

Whole Life Carbon and Energy Performance of Buildings Designed and Delivered Using Life Cycle Assessment and Sustainability Tools - Pitfalls towards Real Practice

Abstract

Buildings are responsible for about 40% of global energy and can influence up to 47% of the UK CO2 emissions. BREEAM, Building Information Modelling (BIM), and Soft Landings (SL) are the most current tools to drive sustainability in building construction industry in the UK. Three major construction projects are under construction on Heriot-Watt University Campus, using these tools.

This is an exceptional opportunity to appraise their efficiency in implementing the best practice in whole building lifetime and in delivering low carbon, low energy, comfortable, and productive buildings. Moreover, my PhD research aims to capture a snapshot of the transition from traditional practice towards digitalized and futuristic construction and distinguish the best approaches, drivers, opportunities, and pitfalls towards low-impact, sustainable buildings.
