Developing a Hybrid System of Data-centric Approaches for Energy Demand Analytics

Abstract

The UK energy sector, in the broadest sense, is expected to endure a dramatic transformation by 2050. Several factors including, climate change, technological advancements, political turbulence, cultural change, big-data revolution, in combination, has already started shifting energy landscape of the UK. Each factor impacts the other, creating an uncertain future that makes the energy demand analytics, simulation and forecasting complex and challenging problem for the industries. On the other hand, with the availability of a large amount of high-resolution smart meter data new exciting opportunities can be created for the UK energy industry to develop their capabilities (by facilitating a suite of the novel computational algorithm for generating useful insights from these data) for ensuring a sustainable progress in this new era of digital transformation.

This project will develop an ambitious, genuinely novel and potentially transformative hybrid system of data-centric approaches that can provide academic/industry stakeholders with unprecedented capabilities for analysing, simulating and forecasting demand. This will be achieved by developing a data-driven modelling schematic that will utilise high resolution energy demand data, at a considerably fine temporal (5 or less minutes), in parallel to contextual information (such as climatic variables, building parameters, appliances profiles, technologies) for effectively integrating uncertainty of influencing factors within the baseline/projected energy demand patterns. The research outcome of the project can be utilized for a range of application such as shaping energy usage patterns, preventing outages, and extraction of useful information to support decision-making, future planning, taking proactive actions to tackle undesirable events, etc.
