The Heriot-Watt University Bursary is an income-related bursary of up to £3,100 a year available to eligible full-time students from England, Wales and Northern Ireland, payable in years 1, 2, 3 and 4 (year 5 not eligible).

Value of award

There are three levels of support depending on household income as assessed by Student Finance:

  • If household income is between £0 and £25,000, an award of £3,100 towards living costs will be made
  • If household income is between £25,001 and £35,000, an award of £2,100 towards living costs will be made
  • If household income is between £35,001 and £42,600, an award of £1,100 towards living costs will be made

Only full-time students liable to pay £9,250 tuition fees and assessed as 'Rest of UK' for fees purposes are eligible to be assessed for this bursary.

How to apply

Students do not need to complete an application form as these awards will be made automatically as long as financial assessment has been carried out by Student Finance. Students must also give Student Finance consent for information to be shared with the University in order for payment of the bursary to be made.

How will I be paid?

The bursary, which is intended as a contribution to living costs, will be made in three instalments throughout the academic year, normally in October, February and April.

Further information

Students on years with an exchange, placement, sandwich or inter-campus transfer will still be eligible for the bursary during placements.

Students repeating years will be eligible for the bursary if their course load makes them a full-time student.

Students who withdraw are required to repay any overpaid bursary based on a pro-rata of bursary paid to the point of withdrawal.

For enquiries, current students should search AskHWU on their Student Portal.
