Robotic Rescue Mission
Heriot-Watt University’s Malaysia Campus hosted a line launcher competition amongst its Mechanical Engineering students, as part of the Heriot-Watt Year of Robotics 2017.
12 groups of 1st year students took part in the challenge, as part of the 'Design and Manufacturing 2' course.
Throughout the course, students were trained to design a working device using engineering principles and applications. They were then guided in methods to manufacture their design experimentally using CAD software and hands on machinery/ apparatus, as well as being supported to develop and use their communication, team working, delegation and time management skills. The students were divided into smaller groups to participate in the competition, with each team being required to think outside of the box and come up with a design which was both innovative and fully functional!
Dr. AL-Qrimli was directly involved in leading the competition:
'We aim to cultivate the passion and dynamism of the youth towards engineering so that together we can engineer solutions of tomorrow. The organisation and administration of inspiring and challenging competitions such as this are an effective way to work towards achieving this aim.
I was delighted with the hard work of each group and the quality of all of the designs and congratulate the winning group for their excellence.'
