To showcase the amazing leaps and bounds imaging technology has taken, we ran two image competitions in 2015.
Spot on Micro
New technological tools have allowed us to “see” into a new world, which would have been completely inconceivable a century ago. These instruments have presented us with the privilege of having “windows” into the micro- and nano-worlds. Electronic and optical microscopes, atomic force microscopes, etc. all provide a new insight into the universe that should be shared. After all, science is a pillar of our society and these are objects of artistic beauty that also deserve appreciation as such.
The Spot On Micro – Image Contest aimed to create a space where professionals and amateurs can share their images of this fascinating world for the enjoyment of everyone.
EnLightenment: Build it, See it, Show it
The Enlightenment project distributed smartphone microscope kits to schools across Scotland. Children built the microscopes and took their own images of life in miniature; more than 500 images were uploaded at the prizes were awarded by Prof. Jim Al-Khalili at the illumiNations event at Heriot-Watt.
'EnLightenment: Build it, See it, Show it' is sponsored by the Wellcome Trust, Olympus, Leica, and the EPSRC Impact Acceleration Account.
