Ian was appointed as member of the University’s Court and its Audit and Risk Committee in August 2023. He is a Heriot-Watt graduate, having studied Accountancy and Finance, and a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland.

After graduating from Heriot-Watt, Ian trained as a Chartered Accountant with Arthur Andersen while working on audits, company floatation and consultancy. He then joined Scottish and Newcastle (now Heineken UK) working in internal audit and commercial finance roles. Following this, he worked for the Royal Bank of Scotland (now NatWest) in several finance roles including the digital function and retail bank. He is now the Director of Finance of Creative Scotland, the public body that funds the arts, screen and creative industries using funds from the Scottish Government and the National Lottery. He has also held non-executive board and committee roles at Edinburgh’s Telford College (now Edinburgh College), with YOU, a personal support charity, and Places for People Scotland.

Ian is a specialist in organisational governance, financial control, audit and reporting.

His wider interests include attempting to play golf and enjoying watching most sports as well as walking and trekking. He also loves going to the theatre.

As well as Court, Ian is a member of the Audit and Risk Committee.
