Bruce has been employed by Heriot-Watt University for 12 years and currently holds the position of Programme Director of Studies for Fashion and Fashion Technology. Prior to working at the University, he was a self-employed designer, designing and producing bespoke garments for clients from all over the world. Since becoming an academic at the University, Bruce has been awarded the Graduate Teaching Award in 2014 and 2017, and the Learning and Teaching Awards in 2016 and 2020. He has previously held the position of External Examiner at Glasgow Caledonian University and is currently an external examiner at Northumbria University.

Bruce’s childhood education took place in Dundee. His first undergraduate degree was in nursing (Registered Nurse for the Mentally Handicapped) before he had a change of career and retrained in the area of Fashion Design. He has a BSc in Clothing Design and Manufacture from Heriot-Watt University, a Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice, also from Heriot-Watt University, and a postgraduate certificate in Management Studies from Napier University. Bruce is also a Fellow of the Higher Education Authority.

Bruce’s experience as an academic member of staff and Programme Director at Heriot-Watt is particularly relevant to his new position on the University Court. His experience of working as an external examiner has also broadened his knowledge and skills within the higher education sector. His scholarship and research interests are in the areas of learning and teaching, sustainability within the fashion industry, and clothing for disabilities.

Bruce’s interests and hobbies outwith his professional life include reading (crime novels), cooking and baking.

As well as Court, Bruce is a member of the Governance and Nominations Committee.
