Sign language is not universal, there are hundreds used throughout the world. But could there be one common sign language that everyone could understand? International Sign promises to be that language! So is this the answer to global sign communication? How universal is International Sign? Who really uses it? Dr Annelies Kusters (Heriot-Watt University) asks whether the global deaf community needs to be multilingual or is International Sign the answer to communicating throughout the world?

Part of the Cabaret of Dangerous Ideas, a collaboration between the four Edinburgh Universities - Take top academics, contentious research, add a comedian and it's the force of nature that is the Cabaret of Dangerous Ideas (CoDI). Now in its 11th year, CoDI drags academics out of their ivory towers to debate today's burning issues and cutting-edge research with audiences at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and monthly at the Strand Comedy Club.
