High quality supervision is central to the PhD student experience as well as being important for Heriot-Watt University’s long term research reputation.  Expectations of research funders in the UK have increased in recent years in terms of training provision and research environment for PhD students (c.f. the “Researcher Development Framework” and “HR Excellence in Research” award).  This Doctoral Supervisor workshop aims to support Academic staff who are new, aspiring or experienced supervisors who are working in an increasingly complex postgraduate training environment.  It will include:

  • Group discussions to explore overcoming challenges of PhD Supervision at Heriot-Watt University
  • Sharing of best practice between experienced and new supervisors
  • Understanding researcher funders’ and University expectations regarding student progression and development.

Sandwich lunch will be provided.
