A selection of mood boards, scrap books and textile designs from the exhibition: John Thomson Reimagined

In 2021, as part of its Bicentennial celebrations, Heriot Watt hosted China: Through the Lens of John Thomson, an exhibition of photographs by Thomson, a student during the 1850s. At a time when photography was still in its infancy, Thomson became one of the earliest photojournalists travelling widely throughout Asia.

The second year Textile Design students used this exhibition as the inspiration for their project to create both a print and weave design. The results of this project are on display here.

The exhibition is on display in the James Watt Centre, at Heriot Watt’s Edinburgh Campus from 6 October 2022 to 29 March 2023. Access is free and visitors to the University are very welcome but opening hours vary so bookings should be made in advance.

Note: This exhibition runs in tandem with 'Colours of Klein' at the same venue. Both exhibitions can be booked and viewed together.
