Inspiring Learning New Year Lecture 2021 - Strengthening transnational learning in a changing world: sustainable local and global communities
The LTA are delighted to announce that Professor Catherine Montgomery, University of Durham, UK, will be delivering the ‘Inspiring Learning’ New Year Lecture 2021 on 26th January.
Professor Montgomery will discuss ‘Strengthening transnational learning in a changing world: sustainable local and global communities’. Prof. Montgomery brings her unique insights from research and practice to explore the role of transnational education in a changing world. Higher education institutions globally are facing unprecedented disruptive trends which are challenging our previously held understandings of the future of international collaboration and global knowledge exchange. Against this backdrop of uncertainty, this lecture sets out to explore how we can develop the sustainable transnational learning communities which will be key to the quality and sustainability of international higher education in this new decade.
The lecture will consider the futures of institutional relationships as well as classroom teaching and learning communities, focusing on the significance of histories, socio-cultural contexts and trust in the local knowledge of transnational communities. The implications of policy and politics and what this all means for classroom practice in learning and assessment will also be considered. Despite the evident challenges the current crisis is presenting for international education, there is evidence of innovation and creativity, particularly in online classroom contexts, and these transitioning forms of internationalisation may provide space for a more ethical and sustainable internationalisation.
Announcing the lecture, Prof. Martha Caddell, Director of the LTA, noted:
“We are thrilled to be welcoming Professor Montgomery to Heriot-Watt to deliver this year’s Inspiring Learning New Year Lecture. She will share her thoughts on how we can develop the sustainable transnational learning communities that will be key to the quality and sustainability of international higher education in the years ahead.
