Introduction and club history
The club has been running for several years. Initially it was set up as as part of the recreational sport programme, but since 2012 has been run independently within the Sports Union.
We are committed to providing opportunities to anyone with an interest in tennis, regardless of their ability and available time to commit to extra-curricular sport. As such we offer competition, coaching and socials aimed at the entire membership which you are welcome to attend.
Our club charter
We aim to provide the following service to all our members:
- To provide an opportunity for members to gain a worthwhile social experience through the port.
- To provide a range of competitive opportunities to allow members to compete individually or for the University.
What does a typical session involve?
|Team||Friday||6.30-9.30pm||Edinburgh Sports Club|
|BUCS Fixtures/Open||Wednesday||1.15-4.15pm||Edinburgh Sports Club|
You should speak to the club coach regarding the session you should attend.
We have a fun warm-up to improve general fitness, increase flexibility and improve on agility, balance, co-ordination and speed .
We also give a general introduction to the game and work on the basics of tennis and the foundation of shots and fun competition within the class.
We have a tennis-specific warm up to improve on ABC’s and prevent injury as well as to improve stamina and fitness. We also offer development coaching on specific shots, game strategies and competitions.
As part of our inclusive remit, we try to give every member the opportunity to compete with other players.
This is done primarily using a competitive mixed league. Entries are open from Week 1 until Tuesday Week 2. Information on entry is available upon request. Entrants are divided into groups, and have the rest of the semester to organise and play their matches for points. Winners are promoted, losers demoted, and the league run again the following semester. More details and the league rules are provided upon entry.
BUCS team tennis is available for experienced and competent club-level players. The format tests both your singles and doubles ability. Men must pay a £5 fee to help cover the cost of match teas. The men’s captain is in charge of team selection; please do not pay the fee unless you have been instructed to do so by him.
The women’s captain will similarly organise a number of friendly BUCS-format fixtures against universities and local women’s teams throughout the year.
The Sports Union has a very busy social calendar. Wednesday nights in particular are popular sports union nights. The tennis club tries to compliment this with nights out of our own, be it watching the US Open on TV, celebrating our BUCS success or even playing laser tag simply because it is great fun. Look out for upcoming socials and please get involved!
