Introduction and club history
Heriot-Watt University Fencing Club has existed for a long time. It has gone from a club with one coach and 3 fencers to a club that has won international student competitions.
At the moment it is a club aimed at all fencers, from experts to beginners. If you have never fenced before or if you have won national medals we are the club for you.
Our club charter
We aim to provide the following service to all our members:
- To provide an opportunity for any member to practice the sport with the assistance of a coach.
- To provide a range of competitive opportunities to allow members to compete individually and/or for the University.
- To provide an opportunity for members to gain a worthwhile social experience through the Sport.
What does a typical season involve?
The club trains twice (plus one additional beginners session) during the week in Sports Hall 2:
- Tuesdays, 5.30 - 7.00pm, Sports Hall 2
- Wednesdays, 3.30 - 7.00pm, Sports Hall 2
- Fridays, 5.30 - 7.00pm, Sports Hall 2
During the Wednesday sessions we have a coach present to give everyone in the club a group lesson on footwork and bladework before we move into individual lessons and practice matches.
Many of our club members have some degree of coaching qualifications themselves, so we’re very much able to help new members with any problems you have, as well as teaching experienced members some new techniques.
Competitions take place periodically throughout the year. We will provide you with everything you need to know about upcoming fencing competitions throughout Scotland, including student competitions and opens.
We encourage you to attend as many as possible, as it’s a great way to learn how to fence better and the great atmosphere and company mean it’s always a fun weekend.
How do I join the club?
Joining the club is simple: just come along to one of our training sessions!
If you enjoy yourself, the fee to join our club is £10 (paid at reception), which will allow you to fence with us for the entire academic year (note: you will of course need a Oriam membership before you can join any SU club).
There is no need for any member to go out and purchase their own equipment in order to fence with us (though if you wish to do so, we can of course tell you where to get the best deals). Just pay at Oriam reception or online: it’s that easy!
