EngD - Engineering Doctorate

EPSRC-funded Centres for Doctoral Training (CDTs) provide a supportive and exciting environment for students. An Industrial Doctorate is an alternative to the traditional PhD for students who want a career in industry. A four-year programme combines PhD-level research projects with taught courses, and students spend about 75 per cent of their time working directly with a company. Heriot-Watt is the lead university in the CDT in Applied Photonics.

A company sponsors the four-year doctorate degree, with an emphasis on research and development in a commercial environment. Research is focused on the needs of the company and may consist of either a single large project or a portfolio of smaller projects. For each project the company makes a minimum cash contribution. Existing company employees are also eligible.
