Ivan Carter-Becker

Ivan, from Durham, is studying Urban Planning and Property Development in the school of Energy, Geoscience, Infrastructure and Society.

What appealed to you most about Heriot-Watt University?

For me, Heriot-Watt's appeal came from both its reputation and location. Being considered one of the best universities for Urban Studies and widely recognised as producing good graduates by employers, Heriot-Watt seemed a natural choice for my degree. This coupled with its fantastic location just outside of Edinburgh meant it was an easy choice when it came to deciding where to go.

Do you feel your degree has prepared you well for a career?

My programme has certainly helped in preparing me for my career after university. In particular, courses run in conjunction with industry leading companies and courses that have included applied case studies have been particularly useful. These give a real understanding of the industry I wished to enter and allowed for the building of contacts which are vital when applying for graduate-level jobs.

Has your degree programme helped you develop links with industry?

Absolutely, as mentioned above the courses that include input from industry leading companies and the various talks/seminars by those in industry allow ample opportunity to develop your links with industry. In addition to this, the strong relationship between Heriot-Watt and employers in industry give you a solid base from which to apply, knowing that your degree will be well received when you apply for graduate jobs or internships.

What would you say to prospective students considering studying at Heriot-Watt?

I would certainly recommend Heriot-Watt and the School of Energy, Geoscience, Infrastructure & Society to any prospective student. The level of teaching and resources available to students is fantastic. In addition to this the University provides a great atmosphere for you to build friendships and enjoy yourself, so give it a go!
