Helen Tainsh: Mathematics with Computer Sciences BSc
Helen, from Manchester, is studying Mathematics with Computer Sciences in the School of Mathematical and Computer Sciences.
What appealed to you most about Heriot-Watt University?
One of the reasons I liked Heriot-Watt was because it’s a campus university, out of the way of Edinburgh, but at the same time it only takes you half an hour to get to the city centre. Guaranteed accommodation for first year also helped meaning that I was only ever, at most, 10 minutes from a lecture.
How are you enjoying your programme so far?
The programme that I’m studying allows me to do mainly maths, but with a bit of computer science, meaning I get a nice variety of courses each semester. I originally enrolled for BSc Mathematics but didn’t like the sound of any of the maths electives. I discussed my options with one of the Senior Lecturers, Dr Mark Lawson, and decided to swap my programme to BSc Mathematics with Computer Science during Freshers Week. You need to make sure that your programme suits you and the School of Mathematical and Computer Sciences has so many programmes to choose from - you just need to find the one you like.
What would you say to prospective students considering studying at Heriot-Watt?
I think you have to see the campus and wander around before you can make your decision. The location may not suit everyone, as you can feel a little like you’re out in the wilderness – but you can hop on a bus and get to the centre of Edinburgh in only 30 minutes so, in reality, you’re very close to the city.
