Embark on a global learning journey with our MSc International Master in Industrial Management (IMIM). This unique programme gives the opportunity to study at leading international universities, allowing you to immerse yourself in the dynamic field of industrial management across contexts and cultures. The program aims to equip students with a science or engineering educational backgrounds with business skills relevant for pursuing managerial careers in internationally orientated manufacturing and service industries. 

This programme is taught full-time over 16 months by leading universities, offering a unique global experience. You will have the opportunity to study in Madrid (Spain), Edinburgh (Scotland), the UAE, or Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia). The final semester will be focused on Master Thesis and can be undertaken anywhere of these locations. 

Throughout the master’s program, you will develop a profound understanding of contemporary issues in Industrial Management. You will be encouraged to critically examine, evaluate, and reflect on the current and future challenges in global industries and service companies. In addition, you'll develop managerial skills for effective communication and teamwork at all organisational levels.  
Beyond the academic curriculum, you will develop key transferrable skills which will set you up for life after graduation. In addition, the international nature of the programme means you’ll communicate and work with individuals from all over the world, helping you navigate and appreciate diversity and multiculturalism. 

Successful candidates will receive both an MSc in Industrial Management (International) from Heriot-Watt University and an International Master in Industrial Management from Universidad Politécnica de Madrid.

The IMIM programme is run by a unique partnership of leading universities in the area of industrial management. Each partner is internationally recognised for an area of expertise in fields such as innovation, logistics and finance; however, all partners share a global outlook and a unified approach that extends beyond technical knowledge. This collaborative effort ensures a well-rounded and comprehensive learning experience for program participants. 

Course content

September Intake - Edinburgh

Year 1

IMIM is a 16-month postgraduate programme and commences in September each year.

Studies begin at Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM), before joining the Heriot-Watt Edinburgh campus in Semester 2. In your third semester, you can choose to study at Heriot-Watt Dubai (United Arab Emirates), Politecnico di Torino (Italy), or Technológico de Monterrey (Mexico).

In Semester 4, the Master Thesis can be studied 'anywhere in the world'. You can choose to study at a university with links to the IMIM Consortium or an industrial or public organisation. We organise this for you as part of the programme and it’s a great opportunity to put your learning into practice.

Entry requirements

We have standard entry requirements for all of our courses that you will have to meet.

Year 1
  • Curriculum vitae (Europass CV Format)
  • Bachelor degree or recognised equivalent from an accredited institution (minimum 3 years full-time study) in a scientific or technical discipline, including management engineering courses.

English language requirements

If your first language is not English, we'll need to see evidence of your English language ability.

The minimum English language requirement for entry to this programme is IELTS 6.0 (or equivalent) with no score lower than 5.5.
