Overview

Psychology is the scientific study of the relationship between mind and behaviour. Our programme covers the core domains of psychology, namely biological psychology, cognitive psychology, developmental psychology, individual differences, social psychology, conceptual and historical issues in psychology, and research methods. Teaching and assessment emphasises application of these core domains to real world issues, and enhances transferable employability skills such as numerical and computer literacy, communication and teamwork.  

This programme is offered with a September and January intake.

The major professional psychology career pathway in Malaysia is as a clinical psychologist, but transferable skills lead to a wide range of occupational roles in commercial organisations, the non-governmental sector, educational institutions, and government. Our psychology graduates have a strong record of employment in clinical practice, business management, marketing, human resources, coaching, counselling, academic research and teaching, to name but a few.

In accordance with our normal practice, our professionally orientated programmes are designed to meet the educational requirements for membership of relevant professional institutions. This programme is accredited by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA), and the British Psychological Society (BPS).

Our BSc Psychology degree is accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS) and qualifies Honours students for graduate registration with the Society.

Go Global Routes

The same BSc Psychology programme is delivered across Heriot-Watt University's three main global campuses in UK, UAE, and Malaysia. This means our students can seamlessly transfer for one semester or more across our campuses without any disruption to their studies, whilst enjoying all the benefits of international travel. The programme is currently accredited by the BPS in the UK and Malaysia only.

Career

The major professional psychology career pathway in Malaysia is as a clinical psychologist, but a psychology degree provides transferable skills in analytical thinking, communication and teamwork. These skills lead to a wide range of occupational roles in hospitals and clinics, commercial organisations, educational institutions, government and NGO sectors. Examples include human resources, market research, advertising and public relations, sales, teaching, counselling, and social work.

Entry requirements

  • A-Level / STPM: CCC
  • UEC: 20 points or less
  • ATAR (WACE/SACE): ATAR 70
  • Canada Year 12 High School Diploma: 70%
  • International Baccalaureate Diploma: 25 points
  • Foundation: CGPA 3.0
  • Diploma: Psychology related Diploma with CGPA 2.5 | Non-related Diploma with CGPA 3.0
  • Foundation in Business / Foundation in Science (from Heriot-Watt University Malaysia): Grade C average including C in English
  • SMA 3 (Indonesia): 7.5
  • Year 12 State Board High School Examination (India): 70%
  • Senior High School Graduation Certificate (China): 80%

Note:

In addition to the entry requirements listed above, applicants must have grade C in Mathematics and Science at SPM/ IGCSE or equivalent. This requirement can be waived if applicants have obtained at least grade pass in Mathematics at a higher level.

English language requirements

If English is not your first language, then evidence of proficiency equivalent to IELTS 6.0 is required.

If you do not have IELTS 6.0, we offer a Pre-Sessional English Programme (PSEP) prior to commencing your studies.
