Undergraduate

Year 1

Students with Surat Tanda Tamat Belajar Sekolah Menengah Umum Tingkat Atas (STTB/SMA) are required to take a foundation course. We recommend Edinburgh College if you wish to study in the UK, or at our Dubai and Malaysia campuses. See our Foundation page for more information.

Postgraduate entry

For most of our Masters level programmes we require a good first degree in a relevant subject.

Research students

For PhD level study, you should have completed a postgraduate qualification equivalent to a UK Masters degree. You also need to provide a research proposal.

English language requirements

If you do not meet our English language requirements, you can apply to one of our academic English programmes, which are specifically designed to prepare you with the language and study skills needed for academic study.

Tuition fees

Tuition fees are listed alongside each programme in the online prospectuses.

Tuition fees are higher for international students. If you are unsure what your residency status is, you can complete a fee status enquiry form, which allows us to assess whether you have a relevant connection to the UK that might positively influence your fee status:

DIKTI PhD Scholarships

The Indonesia-UK DIKTI Scholarship Programme is open for lecturers at Indonesian universities and administrative staff at DIKTI and Indonesian state universities, to undertake postgraduate study at many leading universities and higher education institutions in the United Kingdom. The programme will fund up to 750 academics to come and study in the UK over the next five years. All academic subjects are eligible for funding under the DIKTI programme. For more information please visit the Indonesia-UK DIKTI Scholarship Programme homepage.

We welcome applications for PhD study from students with DIKTI scholarships. To see if Heriot-Watt University has research going on in your field, please visit the research pages of the relevant school:

If you have identified an area of research that matches your subject area, you should complete an application in the usual way by using our online application form.

You will need to submit a research proposal along with your application. This proposal should answer the following questions:

  • What is your particular research question, hypothesis or area?
  • How do you propose to address this question or to develop the field?
  • What research methods do you intend to use?
  • How do you see your work in the wider context of the discipline? How does it relate to existing work in the area?

PhD

The PhD degree is awarded in recognition of a body of work that represents a significant contribution to learning. A PhD is a rigorous enterprise and must show evidence of originality. This may consist in the discovery of new knowledge, the production of a new understanding or interpretation.

Your complete application will then be considered by the PhD selectors.
