Student life at Heriot-Watt

Heriot-Watt University is a popular study destination for German students; we welcome about 100 German students every year, on both undergraduate and postgraduate Masters programmes. In addition, we have between 10 and 20 German students each year who study with us for one semester.

Santander Scholarships

Six Santander Scholarships, valued at £5,000 each, are available to support students enrolling on a taught Masters programme in September 2016 at any Heriot-Watt University campus.

Please note - the number of places we are able to offer to Undergraduate students from EU countries is limited owing to the cap on places funded by the Scottish Government. As such, the entry requirements given below are minimum requirements and no guarantee of a place.

Undergraduate:

We accept the German Abitur from German students with the following grades:

  • School of Maths and Computer Science: Actuarial Science Year 1: 1.9 overall (Where specific subjects are required students study these subjects as Leistungsfächer, with 12 in Mathematics); Computer Science and Mathematics Year 1: 2.0 overall. (Where specific subjects are required students study these subjects as Leistungsfächer, with 11 in Mathematics).
  • School of Life Sciences:  Biology Year 1: Grade 2 to include a science subject at 2; Psychology Year 1: Grade 2 to include mathematics at 2.
  • School of Social Sciences: Year 1: Overall Grade 1.2. There will be a specific subject requirement for all Language Programmes and there will be a specific Maths requirement for all Economics Programmes.
  • School of Energy, Geoscience, Infrastructure and Society:  Complete and Pass with an average of Grade 2.3 (including Mathematics at 11 points for AE/CSE)
  • School of Textiles and Design: Abitur grade 12 or Realschulabschluss grade 2.
  • School of Engineering and Physical Sciences : Please contact the School for entry requirements.

Postgraduate:

For most of our Masters level programmes we require a good first degree, in most cases the equivalent to an Upper Second Class Honours degree from a recognised university, in a relevant subject area.

English language requirements

If you do not meet our English language requirements, you can apply to one of our academic English programmes, which are specifically designed to prepare you with the language and study skills needed for academic study.

Tuition fees

Tuition fees are listed alongside each programme in the online prospectuses.

Visa and immigration information

As an EEA national, there is no requirement for you to obtain a visa to come to the UK. There is the option to apply for a registration certificate to prove your right to live in the UK; however, it is not essential for you to obtain this. Further information can be found on the UKVI website.
