Due to Scottish Government limits on the number of places available, we are only able to offer vacancies to students who can be considered for a Widening Access place.  We have no vacancies for EU applicants (outside the UK) or Scottish applications outside of SIMD40 areas.

To check if you are eligible for a widening access clearing place, please use the post code checker, to see if you live in SIMD Area 1 or 2. Alternatively, call us on our clearing helpline, +44 (0) 131 322 3222.

If you do not meet the criteria for Widening Access, we are happy to say that there are several great options below:

Widening Access vacancies for Scottish applicants (SIMD40 and Care Leavers)

Heriot-Watt University is committed to widening access to students from disadvantaged backgrounds and uses a contextual approach in our admissions procedures to enable us to select applicants with the greatest potential to succeed.

As part of our work on widening access, the Scottish Government has assigned a number of additional places to the University for students entering the University whose home address is within the Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation (SIMD) 40% most deprived areas or who are Care Leavers.

This initiative is aimed at further increasing the number of students who reside in key areas of underrepresentation in higher education taking up a place of study at the University.

Supporting widening access

We recognise that for some students the cost of travel is a barrier to coming to university. In association with Lothian buses, we are pleased to offer help with travel costs to those applicants living in qualifying neighbourhoods in Scotland (defined by the Scottish Government as being the 20% most deprived in the Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation (SIMD)), and Care Leavers, whilst they are at university.

If you accept our offer you will receive a student ‘Ridacard’ that covers the academic year. The offer continues for each year you remain in the University. If you live out with the Lothian Bus route area we will provide equivalent value travel support, which will be agreed on a case-by-case basis.

To check if you are covered by this scheme, call the clearing helpline on +44 (0) 131 322 3222.

College Partners and Articulation Pathways

Heriot-Watt University works closely with a number of college partners in Scotland through articulation pathways. The University admits hundreds of students each year who have completed HNC and HND qualifications. Many of these students enter directly into the later years of degree programmes. If you would like to find out more about this route to a Heriot-Watt degree programme, please get in touch through the Clearing line to discuss options in your chosen subject area.
