Peer Assisted Learning and Ask a Student Success Advisor
The Student Guide Programme
The Student Guide Programme is Heriot-Watt's peer-assisted learning scheme.
The aim of the programme is for Year 3 and above students to provide academic, social, and transition support to Year 1 and 2 students (including direct entry students) in the form of peer-assisted learning (PAL). PAL is a model that promotes cross-year support between students on the same degree programme. It encourages students to support each other and learn cooperatively under the guidance of students in later years.
The programme is designed to help students settle into university life, act as an additional level of academic support, and give them a chance to create some lasting social connections with both other students in their year and students in later years of their degree programme. Some examples of what a Student Guide can help students with include:
- Helping you understand a topic within a course
- Providing advice on how to develop academic skills
- Giving you tips on how to settle into university (e.g. meeting new people or finding your way around)
- Providing advice on how to approach an assignment
This programme is being run in a selection of schools and departments in the 2019/20 academic year. Find out more information about the Student Guide Programme and the subjects involved.
