Equality Act 2010

The Equality Act 2010 provides protection against discrimination and promotes equality of opportunity for people with disabilities. Heriot-Watt University has a duty to make reasonable adjustments for students, staff and other service users in order that disabled people do not face 'substantial disadvantage' in comparison with non-disabled people.

Reasonable adjustments are to be made in relation to:

  • provision, criteria or practice (e.g. selection/admission criteria, exam access arrangements)
  • physical features (e.g. access to lecture theatres, labs etc.)
  • auxiliary aids (hearing loops or the provision of support from a Non-Medical Assistant).

Our Procedures

Examinations and assessment

Special arrangements for examinations and assessment

We have well established procedures in place for making alternative examination and assessment arrangements if you should require this. Depending on your specific needs, a range of alternative methods may be employed including:

  • extra time for examinations and course work submissions
  • disregard of poor spelling, writing and grammar
  • computer
  • scribe
  • reader
  • provision of examination questions in alternative formats e.g. braille or disc or on coloured paper
  • separate accommodation
  • transcription.

If you require alternative examination arrangements you will be asked to provide a medical certificate or other relevant document confirming your disability.

Academic Schools and the Examinations Office require notification from the Disability Advisor of your alternative examination arrangements well in advance. The deadlines for Examination information are as follows:

  • December Diet - 31 October
  • April/May Diet - 28 February
  • Resit exams - 17 July

You are also advised to make yourself known to the invigilator prior to the start of an examination so that the appropriate assistance may be given.

Special consideration for marking

The University operates an anonymous marking scheme for all students. If you require special consideration of your work due to your disability you will receive stickers from the exam venue which should be placed on the front of your examination script. This will alert examiners to disregard poor writing, spelling and grammar in the marking process.
