I returned to university in 1991 to complete an MSc in Marine Resource Management.
In 1993 I started work as a Research Associate at Heriot Watt University, International Centre for Island Technology (ICIT) based at the Orkney Campus. My early research focused on sustainability issues around oil and gas decommissioning and the costs benefit analysis of pollution control.
An interest in resource management problems on small islands became the focus of a PhD which I completed in 2003.
I lecture in energy economics, energy policy, development appraisal and planning.
My courses are used by campus based students in Orkney, Edinburgh, Dubai and Athens.
I am director of the MSc portfolio delivered from Heriot-Watt's Orkney Campus. This includes this distance learning programme in Renewable Energy Development.
My current research focuses on social economic aspects of renewable and marine renewable energy.
I review papers for international journals and publish regularly. I have held external positions with Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) and Scottish Wildlife Trust (SWT).
I live with my family in the town of Stromness in Orkney. I enjoy long distance running, cycling and hill walking. I am a committee member of the Orkney Trout Fishing Association.
