Roles and responsibilities

Ruth is the Programme Director for Food Science and she lectures in Microbiology and Cell Biology.

Ruth's research interests currently focus on prebiotics and probiotics and their effects on pathogens.

Dr Ruth Fowler initially studied Zoology at the University of Edinburgh. She pursued an interest in cellular and molecular parasitology at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine and Imperial College, London, where, for her PhD, she studied the effects of pharmaceutical agents on malaria parasites. She then followed a postdoctoral path: screening pharmaceutical agents for the World Health Organisation and looking at potential drug and vaccine targets with the Malaria Group at Guy's Hospital, King's College London. She returned to the University of Edinburgh in 2001 to examine the role of the cytoskeleton and second messenger molecules at the synapses of nerve cells.

More recently Ruth has been pursuing her interest in science education: at the University of Edinburgh she was involved in knowledge transfer projects and tutoring medics; at Edinburgh Napier University she lectured and authored e-learning materials in the Life Sciences.
