Recreational Sport Programme
The Recreational Sport Programme (RSP) exists to deliver a wide variety of recreational level competitions to encourage maximum student participation. The programme is led by the Sports Union (SU) President. We have five main categories:
The badminton leagues are run on a monthly basis by the club with assistance from the SU President. All the leagues are tiered so it is easy to find a level to suit you. For more information just contact the club (firstname.lastname@example.org).
A weekly squash ladder is run by the squash club. All standards and abilities are welcome. You are responsible for organising matches, so it is up to you how much you play. You can find out more by contacting email@example.com.
A number of our Sports provide additional support to new members. This varies on a sport by sport basis. For further information on the standard and experience required to participate in our sports please refer to our 'Signposter'.
A self-defence based martial art, taught three times a week by our qualified instructor Martin Livingston. The sport focuses on locks, throws and break-falls and is open to any level of experience. Sessions take place on a Tuesday from 20:00 - 22:00, Saturday from 17:30 - 19:00 and a Sunday from 14:00 - 16:00, all in Studio 1. To join you pay £10 at Oriam Reception, or online. A self-defence based martial art, taught twice a week by qualified instructors. It is effective, enjoyable and open to everyone with beginners always welcome. Sessions take place on a Friday from 19:30 - 21:30 and a Sunday from 16:00 - 18:00 both in Studio 1. To join you can pay £10 at Oriam reception, or online. You then pay an appropriate entry fee to the facility. You can contact the club by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
Tae Kwon Do (TKD)
TKD it is a 'hard' style martial art that incorporates the use of many different striking techniques (such as punches, kicks, elbows, and knees) with the aim of ending a fight using a single blow. Sessions take place on a Monday from 19:30 - 21:30 and a Thursday from 20:00 - 22:00 both in Studio 1. To join you can pay £10 at Oriam reception, or online.You then pay an appropriate entry fee to the facility. For further information email TKD@hw.ac.uk or come along to a session.
We offer a range of dance styles and training takes place on a Wednesday (2 - 4pm) and Sunday (2-4pm) in Studio 2 within Oriam.
To join Heriot-Watt dance you must be a member of Oriam before paying the club's membership fee of £10 - this can be done at Oriam Reception, or online. For more information or to come along to a session then e-mail email@example.com.
The most recent sport to be introduced within the participation programme is handball. Club training takes place on Wednesday afternoons (14:30 - 16:00) in SH1. To join, you must purchase an appropriate Oriam membership, and pay a one-off club membership fee of £10. Whether you are an experienced player, or want to try something new, come along and take part!
Run as part of the Active Student Week events that happen throughout the year.
These weeks are dedicated to encouraging as much student participation as possible, with a wide range of activities with emphasis on enjoyment and flexibility in participation; there are opportunities for social interaction and increased levels of physical activity.
