Heriot-Watt Crucible

Crucible group

The programme

Heriot-Watt Crucible is a highly successful leadership and development programme which helps participants:

  • Broaden networks and interdisciplinary collaborations
  • Achieve more impact through KE and links with industry
  • Enhance potential for public engagement
  • Become more creative and innovative in their research

It is an intensive programme consisting of 3 two-day workshops plus preparatory and follow-up work run over a three-month period.  The 30 competitively selected participants learn about public policy, innovation and outreach while building an important network of potential research collaborators, and developing skills and knowledge to improve their innovative capacity.

At the end of the programme, participants have the opportunity to bid for small grants to develop Heriot-Watt Crucible projects.  To be awarded funding, these projects must be interdisciplinary and highly innovative.  We now have a number of successful projects, which  have grown into large research projects with high potential impact for both the university and Society.  See the example videos on the right for just a few of our successful projects.

Who is it for?

Academic staff, principal investigators and senior research fellows at Heriot-Watt University or one of its collaborative research partners.

How to apply

Participation in the programme is by nomination, usually by Head of School, Director of Research, or their equivalents in other organisations.  If you are interested in participating, speak to these people in the first instance, but by all means get in touch with us for more information.
