The Learning and Teaching Academy was established in 2019 to drive forward the University’s ambition to be Pioneering in Education and to realise the Inspiring Learning vision of the Learning and Teaching Strategy 2019-2025.

Our work is framed by a commitment to building a global community in which excellence in teaching and inspiring learning is recognised, celebrated, shared and applied.

Our Ambition.

The vision for the LTA is simple. We are a vibrant, University-wide community enthused and inspired by learning, committed to sharing ideas, and energised by creative and engaging practice.

The LTA supports and encompasses everyone engaged in teaching and learning. It is a true collaboration: across our Schools, our campuses, our student community, our professional services teams, and our partners and friends in the wider higher education sector.

The LTA creates opportunities for inspiring conversations, for innovating in practice, for learning from each other and sharing experience of what really works in teaching practice. Colleagues will be able to access support to help them at key points in their teaching career, with tailored development programmes for those new to teaching and for those who have considerable experience and insight to share.

Our Work.

Our approach to realising the Inspiring Learning ambition, set out in the University’s Learning and Teaching Strategy 2019-25, is framed around four key areas: Inspiring Teaching, Inspiring Collaboration, Inspiring Innovation and Scholarship, and Inspiring Leadership in Learning and Teaching.

Our work is framed by a commitment to building a global community in which excellence in teaching and inspiring learning is recognised, celebrated, shared and applied.

The Learning and Teaching Academy supports this by:

  • Delivering a portfolio of development opportunities for colleagues engaged in learning and teaching, including our LEADS and PGCILT programmes.
  • Opening creative space for exploring and developing innovative approaches to learning and teaching.
  • Providing a focal point for celebrating the inspiring teaching that flourishes across the Heriot-Watt community.
  • Offering specialist input to learning and teaching developments across the University, including the QAA Enhancement Themes.
  • Facilitating strategically-aligned pedagogic research, scholarship and evaluation.

We hope you will join us in building the LTA, in celebrating inspiring teaching, and in helping our global learning community flourish.
