Individual circumstances

The University is committed to ensuring an inclusive environment for all. As part of that commitment we are taking forward a detailed disclosure process for all those eligible for inclusion in the REF2021 submission.

The disclosure of individual circumstances allows the University to take into account how circumstances impact on the ability of individuals to undertake research and allocate output reductions on the basis of disclosed circumstances. Individuals are encouraged to disclose any circumstances that they deem to have been impactful. This may include long-term illness, caring responsibilities, early career researcher status or maternity.

Once a declaration has been made a verification process is undertaken and where information is not already held centrally individuals will be asked for supporting materials. The REF Inclusions Group supports the allocation of any resulting output reductions and informs the Unit of Assessment Coordination Groups and the REF Steering Group.

No information is shared about the declaration made.

Individual circumstances forms are available on these pages.

Research Independence

Research independence is key to eligibility for submission. We have developed a process for individuals to make a case for research independence via the form on these pages.

We are requesting disclosures by no later than 30 December 2019.
