The Postgraduate Graduation Ceremony held in November here at Heriot-Watt's Edinburgh Campus gave us the chance to celebrate the exceptional work of our Postgraduate students throughout the Academic Year of 2016/17.

In addition to an uplifting ceremony where degrees were awarded and the post-ceremony celebrations where photographs were taken with proud family members, a School tradition was upheld with the awarding of Departmental Prizes, celebrating the achievements and hard work of the top performing student from each subject area.

In a nod to the international appeal of our programmes and the strength of our students, this year’s prize winners really could be described as truly global, with winners coming from Germany and Ghana via Jamaica and Greece.

Delighted with their Prizes and the overall experience of studying their Masters degrees here at Heriot-Watt University, our Prize Winners were happy to share personal reflections on their year of Postgraduate study which you can read below.

“Next to the many interesting modules on my programme, the diversity of students at the Heriot-Watt University was what I enjoyed the most. During my year in Edinburgh I made friends with people from all over the world, like Sri-Lanka, Poland, France and of course the UK. These people are as well what I am going to miss the most. "I found MSc International Business Management with Marketing at Heriot-Watt an engaging and interesting degree that has provided me with a robust business knowledge that will stand me in great stead for the future. The Heriot-Watt staff were extremely helpful, actively taking an interest in my learning and wellbeing. Also, the international aspect of this degree has allowed me to network, befriend and learn from individuals from all over the world.

Edinburgh, as a place to live, is vibrant, historical and cosmopolitan with a mystic charm like no other. It is a fantastic city to be a student in, with an abundance of places to meet and socialise with friends and activities to take part in.

I have since secured a role with the Royal Bank of Scotland on their Human Resources graduate scheme. I am enjoying my current role, and although I am unsure of where it will eventually take me, I am confident that everything I have learnt at Heriot-Watt will help me on my way to achieving any ambition I set my mind to."

Saskia Fahnrich - MSc Managing Business Performance

Departmental Prize for MSc Managing Business Performance awarded for best performance on the Programme

"I had a really great time doing my Masters degree in Managing Business Performance at the Heriot-Watt University. The campus offers a great atmosphere to study and to socialise, as you always meet someone you know.

During my programme, we had many challenging group projects which gave us students the opportunity to learn from each other. However, the best aspect of my academic year in Edinburgh was that I met so many amazing people from all around the globe and established friendships for life. I am also glad that I joined the Postgraduate Social Committee where I gathered further experiences and got to know new people apart from those studying programme.

Since I had so many positive experiences in Edinburgh, there are many things I will miss. The great friends I have made is definitely one aspect but I will also miss living in Edinburgh. The city is so diverse and offers various activities, no matter if it is day or night - it's never boring. Now that I have graduated I am searching for a job in the UK as well as in Germany where I can apply the latest skills and knowledge so I am excited to see what comes next."

Kwadwo Boateng – MSc Investment Management with Distinction

Departmental Prize for Investment Management for best overall performance on the Programme

“My time at Heriot Watt has been an incredibly memorable one! When I decided to pursue an MSc in Investment Management here, I thought it was all going to be about classroom sessions, books and grades, but I would later discover that it was a much bigger and more exciting package. First off, the academic and sporting facilities are state of the art, in one of the most beautiful landscapes I have ever come across. Lectures are of high quality, delivered with a hands-on approach and with great assistance from lecturers, which helps to develop a range of important industry skills.

As an Investment Management student with 4 years work experience in Investment Banking, I was privileged and excited to sit under the tutelage of some of the most accomplished professionals in the industry.  It was eye opening and a dream come true. The diversity of students from all walks of life also contributed to varied and informed perspectives on the various projects undertaken. It also presented a great opportunity for social contact and to learn about other cultures. These together with many other wonderful memories inspired and challenged me to work hard and resulted in me attaining a distinction and also receiving the departmental prize as the overall best student.

My time at Heriot-Watt has been nothing short of phenomenal. It is for this reason that I have decided to continue with my studies here by pursuing a PhD in Finance, of which I am thankful to the University for the scholarship awarded me to do it. As the saying goes “never change a winning team”, I therefore ask, why leave your favourite place? More than anything, I am most thankful to God for the opportunity to live out my dreams.”
