Title: Benchmarking Lean Six Sigma Maturity of Higher Education Institutions
As more and more universities wrestle with the challenges the 21stcentury is bringing many are moving towards adopting business process improvement tmethodologies such as lean, six sigma and lean six sigma. Industry has been developing and using these techniques for over 30 years and have significant maturity of knowledge of how best to implement them in different environments – but what makes academia different from industry? And how should academia use LSS? Does it need to do something different? This workshop aims to help academics leaders and change agents understand how to deploy LSS in their institutions and get the best from any LSS initiative.
Key learning outcomes:
In this workshop leadership and CI teams will:
- Understand the benefits of LSS in HEIs
- Understand the challenges in the deployment of LSS in HEIs
- Understand the key elements of a successful lean six sigma deployment
- Have an opportunity to benchmark their own experiences and institutions against a maturity model for the deployment of Lean Six sigma
- Debate the key drivers for success
Stephen Anthony is the CEO of The Institute of Six Sigma Professionals, where he and his team are setting quality standards for Six Sigma in the UK. With a leadership diploma from Harvard University, an MBA and a Masters in Engineering, as well as 25 years industrial experience, Stephen has enviable academic rigour in his approach, blended with down to earth practicality and humour. Stephen is currently studying part time PhD at Herriot University, linking leadership in the public sector to successful Lean Six Sigma implementation. Stephen Anthony is a leading UK Six Sigma Master Black Belt, helping solve complex problems in complex organisations – from finance, public sector to manufacturing. He has provided bespoke in-house consultancy and management development at all levels, as well as mentoring and training for Black Belts, and problem solving on challenging issues.
Professor Jiju Antony is recognised worldwide as a leader in Lean Six Sigma methodology for achieving and sustaining process excellence. He is a Professor of Quality Management in the Department of Business Management at Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, Scotland. He is a Fellow of the Royal Statistical Society (UK), Fellow of the Chartered Quality Institute (CQI), Fellow of the Institute of Operations Management (FIOM), Fellow of the American Society of Quality (FASQ), Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) and a Fellow of the Institute of the Six Sigma Professionals (ISSP).
He has a proven track record for conducting internationally leading research in the field of Quality Management and Lean Six Sigma. Professor Antony has authored over 350 journal papers, conference and white papers and 8 text books of which 4 are related to Lean Six Sigma. He has published over 200 papers on Six Sigma and Lean Six Sigma topics and is considered to be one of the highest in the world for the number of Six Sigma publications. Two of his papers published in 2002 entitled (Critical Success Factors for the successful implementation of Six Sigma projects in organisations (over 600 google citations) and Key Ingredients for the effective implementation of Six Sigma program (over 700 google citations)) have the highest citations making them the most referred to papers in the world in the field of Six Sigma. He has an h-index of 68 according to Google Scholar with total citations exceeding 18000.
Professor Antony has worked on a number of consultancy projects with several blue chip companies such as Rolls-Royce, Bosch, Parker Pen, Siemens, Ford, Scottish Power, Tata Motors, Thales, Nokia, Philips, General Electric, NHS, Glasgow City Council, Scottish Water, ACCESS, Police Scotland, University Sectors and a number of Small and Medium Sized Enterprises. He is a Certified Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt and has trained over 1200 people as Lean Six Sigma Yellow, Green and Black Belts from over 20 countries representing over 175 organisations in the last 14 years.
Title: BOSCARD, what it is and how to use it in a HE context.
BOSCARD, as used by the Lean Team at the University of St Andrews, within the University and elsewhere, is a collaborative and empowering facilitator led tool used to define the parameters of a Lean process improvement project. The definition activity takes place during Scoping, the second step of an eight-step Lean project model developed iteratively by the Lean Team.
The workshop will:
- Begin with a discussion of how the Lean Team uses BOSCARD
- Provide participants with the opportunity to, through a simulation, scope a Lean project using BOSCARD
- Look briefly at the in-house development of BOSCARD, ‘BOSCARD+’
Key learning outcomes:
In attending this workshop participants will:
- Understand BOSCARD and when and how to use it in an HE environment
- Learn how using BOSCARD results in a consultative approach to securing group agreement on problem definition
- Learn how to use BOSCARD to create structure out of an unstructured discussion
- Learn how to shape BOSCARD to meet their institution’s needs
Mark Robinson is Director of Lean at the University of St Andrews and Managing Director of St Andrews Lean Consulting. Mark has considerable experience of the practical application of Lean in universities and other services. He has delivered Lean training, facilitated Lean process improvement events, and advised on the establishment of Lean Teams at universities in e.g. Australia, Ghana, Ireland, Malaysia, New Zealand, the UK, and the USA. Mark has also worked with colleges in Canada, the UK, and the USA. Outside of the education sector, Mark has taken the University of St Andrews’ approach to Lean, which he co-developed, to e.g. the charity, government, law, military, retail and philanthropy sectors, both in the UK and internationally.
In the higher education sector Mark has facilitated improvement events for processes such as student admissions, Post-Graduate recruitment, student housing allocation, examination setting, student exchange, thesis submission, course planning, scholarships, library book purchasing and cataloguing, software lifecycle, building maintenance, charitable contributions, purchasing, invoice payment, staff expenses payment, staff recruitment and staff induction.
Mark, a founder member of the Lean HE peer organisation, regularly writes about and presents on Lean in higher education. He has a chapter in the forthcoming publication ‘Global Lean for Higher Education’. Mark holds an honours degree in History from Victoria University, New Zealand, and a PG Diploma in Business and Administration from Massey University, New Zealand.
Title: Building Effective Six Sigma Teams
Lean Six Sigma instruction focuses mainly on the various tools and techniques of process improvement. Cursory or high level discussions are included on organizational culture. An often overlooked yet key aspect of lean six sigma projects are identifying and managing teams. Effective teams are a critical element of lean six sigma process improvement efforts and can significantly impact the results. In this workshop we will use active learning exercises and the Ideation-Disruption-Aha (IDA) strategy, to learn and apply many tools that can enhance and build Six Sigma teams. The IDA strategy focuses on the participants’ outcomes of critical perspectives, creative confidence, and innovative application. This method is used at the University of Dayton’s IACT (Institute of Applied Creativity for Transformation) to generate innovative design concepts. IDA will be applied to build more effective teams.
Contents of the Workshop:
- In this workshop we will use active learning exercises and the Ideation-Disruption-Aha (IDA) strategy, to learn and apply many tools that can enhance and build Six Sigma teams.
- The IDA strategy focuses on the participants’ outcomes of critical perspectives, creative confidence, and innovative application within the team building exercises.
- IDA will be applied to build more effective teams.
- These simple, yet powerful active learning exercises can be applied by the participants on their own teams when they return to their organizations.
- Topics will include: defining team purpose, strategies for forming teams, dealing with team dysfunction, building trust on team, dealing with conflict, understanding diversity on teams, improving listening and consensus building skills, and team evaluation.
Dr. Sandy Furterer is an Associate Professor at the University of Dayton, in the Department of Engineering Management, Systems and Technology. She has applied Lean Six Sigma, Systems Engineering, and Engineering Management tools in higher education, healthcare, banking, retail, and other service industries. She has achieved the level of Vice President in several banking institutions. She previously managed the Enterprise Performance Excellence center in a healthcare system.
Dr. Furterer received her Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering with a specialization in Quality Engineering from the University of Central Florida in 2004. She received an MBA from Xavier University, and a Bachelor and Master of Science in Industrial and Systems Engineering from The Ohio State University. Dr. Furterer is an author or co-author of 4 reference textbooks on Lean Six Sigma, Design for Six Sigma and Lean Systems, as well as 11 journal articles, 33 conference proceedings, and 93 conference presentations. Dr. Furterer has extensive experience in business process and quality improvements. She is an ASQ Certified Six Sigma Black Belt, a Certified Quality Engineer, an ASQ fellow, and a certified Six Sigma Master Black Belt.
Dr. Elizabeth Cudney is an Associate Professor in the Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Department at Missouri University of Science and Technology. She received her B.S. in Industrial Engineering from North Carolina State University, Master of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering and MBA from the University of Hartford, and doctorate in Engineering Management from the University of Missouri – Rolla. In 2018, Dr. Cudney received the ASQ Crosby Medal for her book on Design for Six Sigma. Dr. Cudney received the 2018 IISE Fellow Award. She also received the 2017 Yoshio Kondo Academic Research Prize from the International Academy for Quality for sustained performance in exceptional published works. In 2014, Dr. Cudney was elected as an ASEM Fellow. In 2013, Dr. Cudney was elected as an ASQ Fellow. In 2010, Dr. Cudney was inducted into the International Academy for Quality. She received the 2008 ASQ A.V. Feigenbaum Medal and the 2006 SME Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineering Award. She has published seven books and over 75 journal papers. Dr. Cudney is a certified Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt. She holds eight ASQ certifications, which include ASQ Certified Quality Engineer, Manager of Quality/Operational Excellence, and Certified Six Sigma Black Belt, amongst others.
