There are many opportunities for you to gain experience in working with industry as part of your undergraduate or postgraduate degree studies.
An industrial placement is an integral part of the MChem in Chemistry with Forensic Science and MChem in Chemistry with Industrial Experience. The placement for Chemistry with Forensic Science is in an accredited analytical lab of a large company or organisation involved with monitoring and/or enforcing legal standards of compliance for their own or other people's operations. The placement for Chemistry with Industrial Experience normally involves molecular synthesis and/or the development of new applications.
A Diploma in Industrial Training (DIT) is available as an option with all Chemical Engineering degree courses. Students have typically taken on very responsible roles and occasionally have opportunities to travel abroad. Recent placements have been with Conoco, Glaxo SmithKline, Nexpress, Shell, BP, Ineos and Avecia. Opportunities for placements abroad, either taught or industrial, can be pursued.
An exciting aspect of our MEng degree courses is that students work in industry for six months, integrated into a current company project that provides excellent real-life training to complement the work done in the University. Indeed, many students are offered jobs at their placement company while others find it to be a very attractive entry in their CV. In the past, we have sent students to UK and overseas organisations, as well as to local Scottish companies.
Students wishing to obtain the Diploma in Industrial Training (DIT) linked to their degree will be assisted to find suitable placements, possibly abroad. The 10-month placement takes place before the final year of their course and is monitored by Mechanical Engineering staff.
All MPhys degree courses will be offered 'with Industrial Experience'. Students will spend a year between fourth and fifth year undertaking a research programme in one of a selection of companies throughout the UK or abroad (subject to Senate approval).
