Diffractive Optics Research Group
Prof. Mohammad Taghizadeh
The Diffractive Optics Group at Heriot Watt University was set up in 1985 by Prof Mohammad Taghizadeh. It was Initially formed as a holography group working on optical holographic elements for optical computing and interconnection applications using dichromated gelatine and other recording media. The focus of the research moved to areas of computer generated holography and diffractive optics in 1987 and the group established full, photolithographic and fabrication facilities in 1990 with funding from EPSRC.
The Diffractive Optics Group have developed a full software suite of design, optimisation and simulation software as well as purchasing commercially available software such as Breault Research Organisation’s ASAP. Fabrication facilities include a class 100 clean-room, photolithography and reactive ion-etching facilities and optical diagnostics facilities such as profilometers, phase contrast microscope and scanning electron microscope.
The group have collaborations with many national and international industrial and research organisations and have been involved, and are involved, with major collaborative research projects funded by EPSRC, PPARC and the European Commission. We have published over 250 papers in scientific journals and at national and international conferences and are the holders of several patents.
The software suite available to the Diffractive Optics Group allows the design of diffractive and micro-optical elements at a range of wavelengths from the ultra-violet to the microwave region. While a significant proportion of our fabrication utilises fused silica and glass substrates for elements in the visible and near infrared, we can also process materials such as Silicon, Germanium and Diamond and we have access to specialised polymer materials for use at shorter wavelengths.
