Roles and responsibilities

I am Director of both the undergraduate (BSc) programme in Brewing and Distilling and the postgraduate (MSc) Programme in Brewing and Distilling.

I teach courses in:

  • Plant Science (physiology/biochemistry of plant growth and development.
  • Malting Science (germination of grains and enzymic endosperm modification).
  • Brewing and distilling raw materials (mobilisation of extract – carbohydrate, protein).
Administration:

Chairman of the Ordinances and Regulations Committee
Member of Senate and the Senate Business Committee

I am a member of the advisory Board of the International Centre for Brewing and Distilling (ICBD).

Funding from the Lindisfarne Trust and the MacPherson Trust (Maltsters Association of Great Britain) has provided funding for a PhD studentship awarded to Angela Bell to study serine proteases malting barley. The project is due for completion in 2011.

I am involved in a Scottish Funding Council, Horizon Project (2011) entitled ‘fermentation process co-products: integrated protein, energy and feedstock recovery’.

I was on the committee of the Institute and Guild of Brewing which initiated a technical Worldwide Distilled Spirits conference. The fourth conference will be held in 2011. I was joint editor of the proceedings of the first two conferences.
