Research Excellence Framework success
The increasing strength of research activity in the school is affirmed by our excellent performance in the Research Excellence Framework assessment. During the most recent assessment, REF2014, our research quality was assessed in 3 'Units of Assessment', namely General Engineering (joint submission with the University of Edinburgh), Physics and Chemistry.
With improvements in all three subjects, our publications or 'research outputs' were particularly highly rated, with >91% rated as 3 or 4 star (internationally excellent or world leading). We showed particularly strong performances of 95% on this measure for both Physics and Chemistry.
In General Engineering, 60% of our Impact was rated as 'world leading', demonstrating the practical significance and industrial relevance of our research. On a measure of 'research power', we were first in the UK.
