Dr Dyrynda's research interests include developmental and comparative immunology, particularly the effects of stress on the immune system and the consequences for successful disease resistance. The research involves a number of different species, but focuses in particular on molluscs and crustaceans, which are an important economic resource. Current aspects of research include the expression and activity of novel anti-microbial peptides, immunotoxicology and cell death processes.

Liz Dyrynda graduated in Zoology from the University of Wales Swansea and later obtained her PhD there in comparative immunology (1995). Following University of Wales and Wellcome Trust Research Fellowships, she was appointed as Lecturer in Aquatic Biology at Swansea in 2000 and joined Heriot Watt as Lecturer in Marine Biology in 2002.
