Mark Connelly

Mark graduated with a BSc in Building Surveying in 2004 and now works at Campion Homes. Here he recalls his time at Heriot-Watt.

What appealed to you most about Heriot-Watt University when you made the decision to come here?

Heriot-Watt has a fantastic reputation as an excellent learning institution, particularly for degrees relevant to the construction industry, so I was very keen to study here. The fact that it was in Edinburgh, an amazing city with so much to see and do, was also a huge draw for me.

What is your favourite memory of your time at Heriot-Watt?

All of my memories of university are enjoyable ones. The diversity of the University and its huge choice of academic and social activities available on campus are great and the sports facilities are particularly good.

How has your degree programme prepared you for a career?

Practically every aspect of the building surveying degree has helped me throughout my career as a quantity surveyor. Even the courses that I didn't think would be relevant at the time have come in handy at some point during my career. Something will crop up and I'll think 'I studied this at Heriot-Watt!'

What would you say to prospective students considering Heriot-Watt as their first choice of university?

I’d tell them to go for it. Heriot-Watt is a great university that offers some excellent courses and creates opportunities for your future. Edinburgh is also a brilliant place to live as a student, and you’ll have fun exploring the city when you’re not studying.
