Public Engagement Champions

The Principal's Public Engagement Prize in 2015 went to Prof. Graham Turner, School of Management and Languages, who has worked with a wide range of allies to drive forward a shift in national thinking on British Sign Language, using social media to help citizens communicate their views to the Scottish parliament.

 Runners up prizes went to Laurence De Clippele, PhD student in the School of Life Sciences, and The Small Plumbing-Ingenious team led by Dr Helen Bridle and Dr Maiwenn Kersaudy-Kerhous from the School of Engineering and Physical Sciences.

Laurence has brought together partners and interested parties to create a highly successful public debate which showcased Heriot-Watt’s expertise in marine conservation, while the Small Plumbing team are empowering the next generation of engineers, with a highly innovative project which used role models to address the gender imbalance in science and engineering which starts at such a young age.

This year also saw the inaugural People’s Choice Award, which was voted for by more than 300 staff and research students across Heriot-Watt. The award went to Chamithri Greru, PhD student in the School of Textiles and Design, who has been facilitating knowledge exchange through co-creating heritage and tradition.
