The Principal's Public Engagement Prizes in 2013 were awarded to academic staff and PhD students from the Schools of the Built Environment, Life Sciences and Engineering & Physical Sciences at a summer reception organised by the Centre for Academic Leadership & Development called 'Celebrating Success in Engagement'.

Winners

At the annual awards' ceremony, Heriot-Watt University Principal, Prof Steve Chapman, announced winners in the four award categories as:

  • Team Award - The Scientific Dive Team, School of Life Sciences
  • Early Career Researcher Award - Dr Kirsten Besemer, School of the Built Environment
  • PhD Student award - Ms Dorothy Hardy, School of Engineering and Physical Sciences
  • Individual Award - Dr Grant Wright, School of the Built Environment

Dr Wright was also named as the Overall Winner of this year's competition. Video's of the prizewinners and their engaging activities can be found on our YouTube channel.

The award winners each received a Principal's Public Engagement trophy and a grant towards future public engagement activities (£500 for the first three prizes; £1500 for the overall winner). Short videos highlighting their public engagement activities have also been recorded and will shortly go live on the Centre for Academic Leadership & Development website.

Heriot-Watt Engage Coordinator, Mrs Katarzyna Przybycien who had co-organised this year's competition with HW Engage colleague, Dr Laura Wicks, said, "The winning projects showcased a great variety of public engagement activities and yet again proved how HWU research is shaped by and impacts on the public through work with schools, public institutions, professionals, or press. It also showed how to successfully employ social media to engage with the world beyond academia".
