In Heriot-Watt University's Year of Robotics, PhD student Siobhan Duncan from the School of Mathematical and Computer Sciences is taking part in the Nationwide competition 'I'm an Engineer, get me out of here!'. The event is a novel and exciting way for engineers to develop their communication skills, gain a fresh perspective on their work, find out what young people think about engineering, and raise awareness of engineering careers.
Students challenge the engineers over fast-paced online live chats. They ask the engineers anything they want, and vote for their favourite engineer to win a prize of £500 to communicate their work with the public.
Siobhan's will be talking to the pupils about her research, which looks at how we can design robots that collaborate with thousands (or even millions) of others identical robots to complete a common goal - known as swarm intelligence!
By sharing her research with pupils across the UK, Siobhan aims to raise awareness of engineering careers - and show girls that its not just for boys!
