Heriot-Watt Online has been providing Independent Distance Learning (IDL) for over 20 years and offers a wide range of professionally oriented programmes in this format. There are currently over 8,000 Heriot-Watt students from 135 countries studying our online programmes. Online students gain the same qualification and degree certificates as on-campus students. The academic standard is exactly the same and all students undertake the same (or equivalent) assessments.

Study when and where you want
Studying online is ideal for those in employment or with other commitments. You have between 2½ and 8 years to complete a full degree and a maximum of two years to complete each taught course. You can also choose to sit exams in one of over 400 exam centres around the world, allowing you to study in your own country or on the move.
Online support network
Studying online doesn’t mean you are on your own. In addition to academic staff, there’s a dedicated Online Student Support Team who are available to guide you on your academic journey. You also have access to the university library and careers services, discussion boards and the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE).

Pay as you go course format
Most online programmes consist of 7-8 courses and research projects. You pay for each course or research project as you enrol, making payments more manageable.
