Heriot-Watt has secured funding to offer funded postgraduate places at its Orkney campus and applications are now open.

Sustainability-minded graduate scientists and engineers with a degree can apply for the MSc courses in Renewable Energy Development, Marine Renewable Energy, Marine Planning for Sustainable Development and International Marine Science.

This year 10-15 places at Heriot-Watt's International Centre for Island Technology (ICIT) in Orkney have been funded by the Scottish Funding Council.

The courses attract students from around the world due to the ICIT's strong reputation and the island campus's offering of a unique learning experience.

Arinze Steven Onyeabo completed the MSc Renewable Energy Development this year and said: “Studying and living in Orkney is amazing. It's a small student community so there is always assistance with literally everything from your coursework and assignments down to your accommodation and general wellbeing.

“110% of the electricity in the Orkney Islands are from renewable energy resources. The Orkney islands are a great example that the future is in renewable energy, generating more energy than they need.

“Most, if not all the energy and consultancy companies here have walk-in policy to assist students with research and dissertation topics, which is truly an amazing opportunity.

"Without a doubt, I would highly recommend studying renewable energy at the Heriot-Watt University Orkney campus.”

Dr David Woolf, course co-ordinator, said: “Graduates with an interest in renewable energy and marine science, and who want to help tackle problems with real significance to society, should apply for these funded scholarships.

“Orkney is a global leader in innovation in marine energy technology and energy systems, and the ICIT has played a key role in that.

“Our MSc students have access to world-leading technology and research, an international network of contacts and the opportunity to study in one of the world's most beautiful landscapes.”
