Students are today getting a taste for the hustle and bustle of Wall Street with the arrival of a new Bloomberg Trading Simulation room.

The facility, which is used by the world's leading financial decision-makers will allow students to get an idea of real-time stock, bond and commodity prices.

I would say the opportunity for students to train using such a state-of-the-art system is indeed a superior advantage.

The new equipment also provides an insight into industry trends, the wider global market, breaking news and analytics to help leading business and financial professionals make better informed investment decisions.

Students are experiencing what life is like for the 325,000 leading banks, corporations and government agencies in 175 countries around the world who already use the software, giving them real-world experience that will enhance their career prospects.

Deputy Head of AEF Department, Associate Professor of Finance Dr Mo Sherif said: “Having the practical training of portfolio building with the theoretical knowledge will strengthen our students' capabilities and also enhance their career prospects.

“Having used Bloomberg Terminal during my career in the industry, I would say the opportunity for students to train using such a state-of-the-art system is indeed a superior advantage.

“The system is designed to allow users to analyse the financial markets from various dimensions and for financial and economic researchers, what could be better than a direct access to real-time data at your fingertips.

“It is great to have a taste of Wall Street, right here on our campus in Edinburgh.”

There are also plans afoot to make the room available to the Undergraduate programmes and to invite Scottish high school pupils for practical demonstrations.

The trading room may also offer potential to the University's Business MSc students, given Bloomberg's role as a news distributor – featuring live news feeds as it breaks.

The School will have access to coverage from over 30,000 aggregated news sources from 150 bureaus in 72 countries. In addition, the feature provides more than 5,000 original news stories each day.
