Professor Richard A. Williams, Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Heriot-Watt University, said: “Robotics and artificial intelligence  are becoming increasingly engrained in the common consciousness as the tremendous opportunities created by this growing industry become ever clearer.

“Dubai is very much at the forefront of this exciting new technology and has embraced it wholeheartedly in various sectors including the Dubai Police force, which has set-out ambitious plans to integrate artificial intelligence in many of its day-to-day operations.

“At Heriot-Watt we are proud of our reputation as a world-leader in this field and it is fitting to open our 2018 Distinguished Lecture series with this fascinating subject at our Dubai campus.

“I hope many people take this unique opportunity to engage with our guest speaker and meet our top academics and industry partners.”

Heriot-Watt established the prestigious Vice-Chancellor's Distinguished Lectures to bring global leaders of industry, business and academia to share their knowledge and vision with students, colleagues and guests.  The lectures cover globally important topics, from manufacturing and energy sustainability to the future of the internet, and are designed to provoke discussion and debate.

Professor David Lane is a leader in international research, innovation and policy in the field of robotics and artificial intelligence. Ahead of his trip to the Middle East he said: “We are living in an extremely exciting time for robotics and artificial intelligence .

“The industry has the potential to revolutionise everyday life across a full range of sectors – in everything from hazardous environments such as offshore energy and nuclear to healthcare and agriculture. It is affecting everything that moves, changing industries, increasing productivity and impacting on some patterns of employment.

“This potential has led to unprecedented levels of interest across the world as governments, industry and the general public recognise the increasing societal and economic impacts from robotics and artificial intelligence.”
